Uganda Travel tips

Uganda, saturated in colour, outstanding natural beauty of its people and landscapes have and always will stir inspiration for travelers and residents.

Parts of the country have changed very little in the last hundred years, the period of turmoil between 1967 and 1986 virtually ground all industrial and economic progress to a halt. This was an era when other countries in Africa were enjoying the fruits of international aid and their economies expanded as fast as their populations.

Uganda has only just started to receive positive international attention and it has been slow and cautious in coming. The increasing confidence with which donor countries treat Uganda is a direct result of its current leadership, which has been so responsive in progressive policy making.

Fight to Uganda

Uganda has several Airlines flying in and out of the country. Kampala’s international airport is Entebbe. Scheduled airlines flying to Entebbe include: Air Burundi Air Rwanda (to/from Kigali), Air Tanzania, British Airways, SN Brussels, EastAfrican Airlines, Emirates, Gulf Air, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, Rwandair Express, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Eagle Air and United Airlines both Direct flights from Europe and from other African countries.

Buses and taxis are available from the airport to the city. A wide network of buses/taxis run throughout the country connecting almost every town. Within Kampala, taxis, special hire taxis and motor bikes provide transport within the city and its suburbs. These are found on major roads in te city center, as well as the 2 taxi parks. The journey time is approximately 30 minutes and fare is about 20$.

Over land:

There are land borders with Kenya, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zaire. Bus services operate from all the capitals to Entebbe.

By water

Ferry services operate from Tanzania, Mwanza to Port Bell, on Lake Victoria

TRAVELLERS

Normal caution is required by female travellers/visitors. Women travellers should dress modestly and decently since Uganda has a wide range of cultural differences and morals. Day time temperatures are generally warm to hot so bring light clothes. Evenings are cooler especially at high altitudes so carry a couple of light sweaters. Donot move alone were possible especially at night. Be cautious of unsolicited male company.

Visitors to Uganda should inform the Airlines in advance incase they are travelling with a baby or toddler. There is plenty to interest children in Uganda. Several activities will keep children entertained like wildlife spotting in Wildlife parks, Ballet and Modern Music schools, Horse riding lessons, Jumping jacks and squad Biking. Facilities should also be checked when booking Airlines because these vary in each Aircraft. Attention should be given to the risks of Malaria, Dysentery, heat exhaustion.

Uganda has few special facilities for disabled travelers. Several places have special facilities for the disabled like hospitals and some Hotels like Sheraton Hotel. Wheelchairs are difficult to accommodate on public road transport, and private hires will normally need to be made. However, this should not discourage disabled travelers.

Student travelers get no special discounts on facilities except students from international Air travel. The rates advertised for Parks or Museums as student prices only apply to Local students and not international students.

Gay and Lesbian travelers should exhibit extreme discretion, since the act is illegal in Uganda and gay clubs and bars are absent. There is general toleration by ordinary people of discrete behavior.

SAFETY TIPS:

Traveling is better done during Daylight hours, since most thieves operate during the night. Please avoid being driven by a drunk driver.
